Calymperes afzelii is distinguished by the leaves to 6 mm, little differentiated gemmiferous leaves from non- gemmiferous leaves, well developed teniolae with cell walls entire not porose and not conspicuously thickened, gemmae present on the ventral surface of the leaf apex, and thickened multistratose leaf margins.
 
Calymperes afzelii se distingue por las hojas de hasta 6 mm, hojas gemíferas poco diferenciadas de las hojas no gemíferas, teniola bien desarrollada con paredes celulares enteras no porosas y no conspicuamente engrosadas, yemas presentes en la superficie ventral de los ápices de las hojas, y márgenes de las hojas engrosados, multiestratificados.
