Notes:
Ecology: Páramo; associated with marhes and bogs, on humic soil. Elevation: 3460-3470 m. Distribution: In the Neotropics recorded from Mexico, Guatemala and Colombia; widespread, particularly in the north temperate regions.
 
Ecología: Páramo; asociado con ciénagas y pantanos. Sólo conocido para Colombia. Elevación: 3460-3470 m. Distribución: Neotrópico reportada también para México y Guatemala; ampliamente distribuido, particularmente en las regiones templadas del norte.

Plants medium-sized to large. Stems usually erect, irregularly pinnately branched; in cross-section hyalodermis absent, central strand present; paraphyllia absent; paraphyllia rare, foliose. Stem leaves spreading to ± squarrose from sub-sheathing base, narrowing gradually or abruptly cordate or rounded-triangular base, to 3 mm long, apex acuminate, smooth, not plicate, expanded base concave, acumen furrowed/channeled, occasionally subtubular; margins entire to serrulate; costa short and weak, single or double, ca. 1/6-1/5 leaf length; median and upper laminal cells linear, ± thick-walled, porose, or weakly so; alar group ovate or rectangular, extending from the leaf margin 0.30-0.35 to costal region, cells differentiated, basal cells rectangular or short-rectangular, inflated and hyaline, upper cells quadrate or rectangular, only slightly inflated. Dioicous. Sporophytes not recorded from the Neotropics.
 
Plantas medianas a grandes. Tallos usualmente erguidos, irregularmente pinnados; en sección transversal sin hialodermis, cordón central presente; paráfilos ausentes; paráfilos raros, foliosos. Hojas de los tallos extendidas ± escuarrosas desde una base sub-vaginante, base estrechándose gradualmente o abruptamente cordada o redondeado-triangular, hasta 3 mm de largo, ápice acuminado, liso, no plicado, base expandida cóncava, acumen surcado/acanalado, ocasionalmente subtubular; márgenes enteros a serrulados; costa corta y tenue, simple o doble, aprox. 1/6-1/5 del largo foliar; células de la lámina mediales y superiores , ± con paredes delgadas, porosas, o levemente así; grupo alar ovado o rectangular, extendiéndose desde el margen de la hoja 0.30-0.35 hasta la región costal, células diferenciadas, células basales rectangulares o corto-rectangulares, infladas e hialinas, células superiores cuadradas o rectangulares, solo ligeramente infladas. Dioicas. Esporofitos no reportados para el Neotrópico.
