Notes:

Ecology: Wet lowland forest; submerged, attached to rocks, branches and trunks of shrubs and trees; reported from Venezuela at elevations from 100-300 m. Elevation: Distribution: Confined to upper Amazon basin of Brazil and Bolivia, Orinoco Delta of Venezuela, and Guiana, also from Central America (Nicaragua). Specimens: VENEZUELA. Amacuro: Rusby 452 (NY). BOLIVIA. Santa Cruz: Aug 1907, Herzog 121 (L). Hydropogonella gymnostoma is a rare throughout its range. The species is distinguished by the flaccid, oblong, elliptical or oblanceolate leaves, entire margins, absence of a costa, and capsules lacking a peristome.

 

Ecoregiones. Bosque amazónico. Hábitat. Inmerso, adherido a rocas, ramas y troncos de arbustos y árboles. Altitud. ca. 100-300 m. Distribución. Cuenca amazónica superior de Brasil y Bolivia, Delta del Orinoco de Venezuela y Guyana, también en Centro América (Nicaragua). Hydropogonella gymnostoma es rara en toda su distribución. Esta especies se caracteriza por el hábito fláccido y suave de las plantas, hojas oblongas, elípticas u oblanceoladas, márgenes enteros, sin costa y cápsulas sin peristoma.

Plants rather small, forming loose, mats, pale green. Stems creeping or spreading, lax, to 15 cm long, irregularly pinnately branched. Leaves 3-ranked, distant or somewhat crowded on stem or branch tips, elliptical to obovate or oblanceolate, to 2.2 mm long, flaccid, apex bluntly acute to obtuse, occasionally apiculate; margins plane, entire; ecostate; laminal cells pellucid, smooth and firm-walled, apical cells short, 1-2:1; median cells oblong-fusiform or long hexagonal; alar cells oblong-short rectangular to subquadrate; marginal cells subquadrate to short-rectangular, forming an indistinct border. Autoicous. Perichaetia terminal on short branches. Capsules immersed to slightly emergent, urn ellipsoid or short cylindrical, to 1 mm long; annulus absent; opercula short-rostrate; peristome absent. Calyptrae mitrate, base slightly laciniate. Spores smooth.

 

Plantas bastante pequeñas, formando matas laxas, verdes pálidas. Tallos reptantes o patentes, laxos, hasta 15 cm de largo, ramificaciones irregularmente pinnadas. Hojas en 3-filas, distaciadas o algo agregadas en los extremos de los tallos o ramas, elípticas a obovadas o oblanceoladas, hasta 2.2 mm de largo, fláccidas, ápices obtusamente agudos a obtusos, ocasionalmente apiculados; márgenes planos, enteros; ecostadas; células de la lámina pelúcidas, lisas y con paredes firmes, células apicales cortas, 1-2:1; células mediales oblongo-fusiformes o largo hexagonales; células alares oblongo-cortas rectangulares a subcuadradas; células marginales subcuadradas a corto-rectangulares, formando un borde indistinto. Autoicas. Periquecios terminales en ramas cortas. Cápsulas inmersas a escasamente emergentes, urna elipsoide o corto cilíndrica, hasta 1 mm de largo; anillo ausente; opérculo corto-rostrado; peristoma ausente. Caliptra mitrada, base escasamente laciniada. Esporas lisas.
