general taxon notes:

Hygrohypnum molle is very close to H. tsurugizamicum Cardot, an endemic species to Japan.

Plants small to rather large, green or yellowish green, glossy. Stems prostrate, irregularly branched; branches ascending, elongate, to 2–3 cm long. Stem leaves erect or spreading above, 0.8–2.0 mm × ca. 0.9 mm, elliptical to subcordate, obtuse at apex; margins entire or serrulate near apex; costae short, double, vanishing at 1/4–3/4 the leaf length; median leaf cells linear, 45–60 mm × 3–4 mm; apical and submarginal cells shorter; basal cells thick-walled, porose; alar cells subquadrate to shortly rectangular, forming an indistinct group. Autoicous. Setae 12–15 mm long, reddish brown; capsules reddish brown, cylindrical, curved; endostome segments carinate; cilia 1–2, shorter than or as long as the segments, nodulose. Spores 11–13 mm in diameter, minutely papillose.
