Distinguishing features include reddish colored plants, stem leaves with fibrils, branch leaves arranged in ranks, and chlorophyll cells consistently exposed on both surfaces. Andrews (Bryologist 50: 184, 1947) regarded this species as a synonym of S. capillifolium; considered a valid species by H. Crum. Assigned to section Acutifolia.
Los rasgos de reconocimiento incluyen plantas coloreadas de rojo, las hojas del tallo con fibrillas, hojas de las ramas ordenadas en hileras, y células clorofilosas expuestas consistentemente en ambas superficies. Andrews (Bryologist 50: 184, 1947) sinonimizó esta especie bajo S. capillifolium; es considerada una especie válida por H. Crum.
