Similar to S. magellanicum but differing by the absence fibrils in the cortical cells of stem and branch stems, pseudopores numerous along the commissures on the outer surface, more on the inner surface of branch leaves, and leucocysts walls appearing vermiform. Assigned to section Sphagnum.
 
Es similar a S. magellanicum pero se diferencia por la ausencia de fibrillas en las células corticales de tallos y ramas, numerosos pseudoporos a lo largo de las comisuras en la superficie externa, más en la superficie interna de las hojas de las rama, y paredes de los leucocistos de apariencia vermiforme.
