Notes:

Ecology: Open montane to páramo and humid puna; boggy habitats or submerged in pools and lake margins. Elevation: 2035-4400 m (Venezuela: 2600-2650 m, Colombia: 2600-3800 m, Ecuador: 2500-3800 m, Peru: 3000-4400 m, Bolivia: 2035-3870 m). Distribution: Rather widespread in the Northern Hemisphere, tropical Andes (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru); Southeast Asia. Assigned to section Cuspidata.

Branch leaves not flattened when dry (not recurved at tips or notably wavy-margined as in S. sancto-josephense), stem leaves with upper hyaline cells on inner surface lacking a large membrane gap nor small, or large but not conspicuously edged by fibril stumps, if at all (compared with S. sancto-josephense). Sphagnum lehmanni Warnst. var. aequiporosum Warnst. is a possible synonym.

Plants flaccid, slender, bright-green to yellow. Stems pale-yellow, cortex ± differentiated, 2-layered, fibrils and pores absent, cells not inflated, but elongate ± thick-walled, wood cylinder yellow-green. Stem leaves ovate to ovate-deltoid, concave, apex acute, broadly bordered below; hyaline cells narrow, shorter above, with or without fibrils above, not divided, on the outer surface with occasional small end pores, on the inner surface with the membrane largely resorbed in cells near the leaf tip, with gaps decreasing in size toward the base and leaf sides. Branches in fascicules of 4 (2 spreading, 2 pendent), cortex 1-layered, retort cells well differentiated. Branch leaves scarcely or rarely undulate when dry, long-lanceolate, involute-concave, toothed across the tip, margins entire or weakly serrulate toward apex, bordered by 2-4 narrow rows of cells; hyaline cells fibrillose, on the outer surface with 2-5 small, rounded or elliptic ringed pores in the ends and corners, on the inner surface with 2-6 somewhat larger, rounded, unringed pores at the ends and corners (but often faint on both surfaces); in cross-section green cells broadly trapezoidal, exposed more on the outer surface, hyaline cells ± convex on the inner surface, plane on the outer surface. Crum 1984.
