general taxon notes:
This species is similar to Plagiomnium japonicum (Lindb.) T. Kop., but differs by much narrower leaves with long-decurrent leaf bases, clustered setae, and synoicous plants.

Ann. Bot. Fenn. 5: 146. 1968. Astrophyllum drummondii (Bruch. & Schimp.) Lindb., Musci Scand. 14. 1879. Mnium drummondii Bruch & Schimp., London J. Bot. 2: 669. 1843. Type: Canada.
Plants medium-sized, bright green, in loose tufts. Stems and infertile branches prostrate, with dense rhizoids; fertile branches erect, ca. 2.0 cm high. Leaves sparse, crisped when dry, spreading when moist, oblong to elliptical, long-decurrent at base, abruptly acute or cuspidate at apex; margins distinctly bordered by 2–3 rows of elongate-rectangular cells, strongly serrate above mid-leaf, with 1–2-celled teeth; costae ending just below the apex. Synoicous. Setae clustered, in a group of 3–5, ca. 2–3 cm long; capsules elongate-ovoid, pendulous; opercula conic at base, apiculate at apex.
