The leaf shape and sizes, as well as the leaf cells are quite variable in Plagiothecium cavifolium.

Plants small to medium-sized, pale green or yellowish green, glossy, in dense mats. Stems prostrate, irregularly branched; branches ascending, more or less julaceous, often complanate near tips; leafy branches 7–10 mm × 2.0–2.5 mm; central strand present. Stem and branch leaves similar, imbricate, symmetric or somewhat asymmetric, ovate or elliptical, 1.3–2.0 mm × 0.6–1.0 mm, distinctly concave, abruptly apiculate, reflexed at apex; margins entire below, somewhat serrulate at apex; costae short, double, sometimes reaching to mid-leaf; median leaf cells linear-rhomboidal, 60–120 µm × 8–12 µm; apical cells shorter, broader; basal cells somewhat thick-walled; alar regions decurrent, consisting of 2–3 rows of rectangular or linear-rhomboidal cells. Brood bodies numerous. Dioicous. Male and female plants similar. Perichaetial leaves shortly ovate-lanceolate, ca. 2.5 mm long, sheathing at base; costae short. Setae 10–15 mm long, reddish brown below, yellowish above; capsules erect, oblong, slightly inclined, sometimes curved, 2.0–2.5 mm long; opercula conic-rostrate; annuli developed; stomata present at neck; peristome typical for the genus; cilia 1–3, nodulose. Spores 10–13 µm in diameter, papillose.
