Notes:
Two varieties recognized for the tropical Andes: Orthotrichum diaphanum var. diaphanum and var. podocarpi (Müll. Hal.) Lewinsky. See Subordinate Taxa for the latter taxon.

Ecology: Open montane and dry inter-Andean forest, also associated with disturbed sites. Elevation: 2200-3700 m (Colombia: 2250 m, Ecuador: 2340-2500 m). Distribution: Rather widespread in the Northern Hemisphere, Hawaii, in the Andes only known from Colombia and Ecuador. The leaves exhibiting hyaline apices separate this taxon from all other members of Orthotrichumin the tropical Andes.
 
Ecología: Bosque montano abierto, también asociados a sitios perturbados. Elevación: 2200--3700 m (Colombia: 2250 m, Ecuador: 2500 m). Distribución: Algo amplia en el Hemisferio Norte, Hawaii, en los Andes sólo conocida de Colombia y Ecuador. Las hojas con ápices hialinos separan este taxon de todos los otros miembros de Orthotrichum en los Andes Tropicales.
