Plants medium-sized to moderately large, 2–4(–5) cm high, yellowish green or brownish green, in dense tufts. Stems erect, usually branched above, densely radiculose below. Leaves up to 8 mm long, crispate when dry, erect-spreading to strongly squarrose when moist, linear-lanceolate from an erect, obovate, strongly clasping base, abruptly narrowed to a widely spreading, channeled acumen, upper portion usually 4–5 times as long as the sheathing base; margins plane, only serrulate near the apex; costa slender, percurrent to shortly excurrent; upper cells quadrate to short-rectangular, 6–8 µm wide, thick-walled; basal cells at the sheathing base, elongate-rectangular to linear, 80–120 µm × 9–12 µm, rather thick-walled, not porose, clear, smooth; alar cells not differentiated. Autoicous. Perichaetial leaves similar to the upper stem leaves, with a longer clasping base. Setae usually clustered, 2–4 per perichaetium, straight, ca. 10 mm long; capsules cylindric, 2–3 mm long, erect, symmetric or nearly so, smooth, not strumose, stomata present; opercula rostrate, much shorter than the urns; annuli none; peristome teeth reddish, linear-lanceolate, inserted below the mouth, divided well below the middle, vertically striate and strongly papillose.
