Atractylocarpus longisetus is distinguished by subulate-ovate leaves to 10 mm, toothed apex, excurrent costa, ca. 1/3 wide at leaf base, elongate distal lamina cells, thin-walled, rectangular basal cells, few alar cells, erect, often twisted setae to ca. 25 mm, erect capsules, divided peristome(ca. 2/3), and calyptrae entire at base. Campylopus laxiretis Herzog, collected by Herzog in 1908 from Incacorral (Department of Cochabamba), is a synonym.

Plants somewhat small to medium sized, soft and rather delicate, forming tufts, mostly golden-yellow or -brown. Stems erect, 1-4 cm tall, few branched; central strand present; radiculose. Leaves erect-spreading to falcate-secund, setaceous-subulate from a short ovate base, 5-10 mm long, concave, apex rather bunt and toothed; margins entire below, distal 1/3serrate; costae excurrent, ca. 1/3 base width; laminal cells smooth, subula cells long rectangular to oblong-linear, 50-80 µm long, 4-6 µm wide; base cells rectangular, 40-50 µm long, to 20 µm wide, ± thin-walled; alar cells few, reddish, often lost in dissection. Autoicous. Perichaetia terminal; leaves long setaceous from an elongate oblong convolute base. Setae elongate, 16-28 mm long, distal 1/3-1/2 twisted, yellow to golden-yellow. Capsules erect to suberect, urn obloid-short cylindrical, to 2 mm long, furrowed and often slightly twisted when dry; annuli absent; opercula conic-long rostrate and rather oblique; peristome single, divided ca. 2/3 or nearly to base, outer surface vertically to obliquely striate (or nearly smooth), inner surface coarsely papillose. Calyptrae cucullate, 3-3.2 mm long, smooth and naked, base entire. Spores papillose, 14-16 µm in diameter.
