Fabronia ciliaris is distinguished by the entire to irregularly denticulate leaf margins. Three varieties are recognized in the tropical Andes, var. ciliaris and var. polycarpa are both common, var. wrightii is relatively rare. There is often considerable variation exhibited in the features used to characterize the three varieties. One might suggest cynically removing only a single leaf for examination and make the determination based on that leaf, examining a few additional leaves from the same or different plants may lead to indecision or more than one variety.
