Notes:
Ecology: Páramo; marsh and bogs, on moist humic soil, rarely submerged. Elevation: 3000-3960 m (Venezuela: 3500 m, Colombia: 3000-3960 m). Distribution: Rather widespread in the Northern Hemisphere; in the Neotropics reported from the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Colombia.
 
Ecología: Páramo; ciénagas y pantanos, en suelo húmico húmedo, raramente sumergidas. Elevación: 3000-3960 m (Venezuela: 3500 m, Colombia: 3000-3960 m). Distribución: Más bien ampliamente distribuida en el Hemisferio Norte; en el Neotrópico reportados en República Dominicana, Venezuela y Colombia.
 
Specimen: VENEZUELA. Mérida: Fransén 1254 (FLAS).

Plants medium-sized, green to variously variegated green and red, red to brown. Stems irregularly pinnately branched, stem and branch shoots often hooked or curved; in cross-section hyalodermis absent, central strand absent; pseudoparaphyllia foliose, rare. Stem leaves lanceolate to ovate lanceolate, base ± erect, distal part abruptly curved, usually distinctly plicate, concave, not or only weakly decurrent, apex acuminate to acute; margins plane, finely serrulate at apex, entire below; costa single, ca. 2/3 leaf length; median and upper laminal cells linear, smooth with walls entire or slightly thick-walled and porose; basal and alar cells similar, irregularly rectangular, thick-walled, usually porose. [Setae elongate, red. Capsules curved and ± horizontal, urn cylindrical; peristome well developed. Calyptrae cucullate, naked. Spores lightly papillose].
 
Plantas de tamaño medio, verdes a variadamente variegadas verde y rojas, rojas a pardas. Tallos irregularmente pinnados, brotes de tallos y ramas generalmente uncinados o curvados; en sección transversal hialodermis ausente, cordón central ausente; pseudoparáfilos foliosos, raros. Hojas de los tallos lanceoladas a ovado lanceoladas, base ± erecta, parte distal abruptamente curvada, usualmente claramente plicadas, cóncavas, no o sólo levemente decurrentes, ápice acuminado a agudo; márgenes planos, finamente serrulados en el ápice, enteros abajo; costa simple, aprox. 2/3 del largo de la hoja; células mediales y superiores de la lámina lineares, lisas, con paredes enteras o ligeramente engrosadas y porosas; células basales y alares similares, irregularmente rectangulares con paredes engrosadas, usualmente porosas. [Setas alargadas, rojas. Cápsulas curvadas y ± horizontales, urna cilíndrica; peristoma bien desarrollado. Caliptra cuculada, desnuda. Esporas ligeramente papilosas].
