general taxon notes:
This variety differs from var. subnigricaule in having smaller leaf cells and one or two rows of slightly smaller submarginal leaf cells.

Harvard Pap. Bot. 7: 43. 1995. Type. China: Hainan, Mt. Diao-luo, ca. 1050 m, P.-J. Lin et al. 945A (holotype IBSC, isotype FH).
 
Plants small to medium-sized, mat-forming. Stems procumbent, 1–2 cm long. Leaves mostly broadly obovate to spathulate with short, apiculate leaf apices; laminal cells small, 18–23 µm wide, lax, thin-walled; one or two rows of submarginal leaf cells slightly smaller than paracostal cells; leaf borders very narrow, usually consisting of one row of cells. Perichaetial leaves acute. Setae short, 5–7 mm long, strongly papillose; capsules small, oblong-ovoid, ca. 1 mm long.
