22. Perilla L.

One or 4 species, Asia; introduced widely.

Perilla generally has been treated as comprising four taxa, which variously have been regarded as separate species or as components of P. frutescens. In the strict sense, P. frutescens is thought to represent an allotetraploid derived through past hybridization between as yet undetermined parents from among the other three diploid taxa in the genus (Nitta et al., 2005). However, there is no modern taxonomic revision of the genus available.
