Generic distribution and diversity: A large and diverse pantropical genus of over 800 species, with the strongest representation in the Neotropics and Madagascar (Radcliffe-Smith 2001); in Asia slightly less than 100 species. Natural subdivisions of this vast genus are still not well understood, in particular not in Asia. (From: Chayamarit & van Welzen 2005.)
