General/Distribution: A genus with c. 15 species; distributed in Japan, China to Central Europe; represented in Pakistan by only one species which is cultivated and grows wild in some areas.

Perennial herbs with short rhizomes. Roots fleshy or elongated with swollen parts. Leaves basal, distichous, sessile, linear. Inflorescence a cymose panicle, 1-6(-10)-flowered, scape up to 1.5 m tall. Flowers slightly zygomorphic, hypogynous. Tepals 6, petaloid, funnel shaped, basally connate into a tube. Stamens 6, epiphyllous at the tip of the tube, anthers dorsifixed. Ovary trilocular, style erect, stigma capitate. Fruit a capsule (rarely formed).
