Vavara and its sole species V. breviflora has two stamens unequally inserted, muticous anthers and pollen grains that are “9-sulcata” (Benoist, 1962: 131). These traits strongly suggest a placement in Justicieae: “justicioids” (sensu McDade & al., 2000) (from McDade & al., 2008). This genus was not validly published by Benoist (1962). Its only described species is based on the same 3 syntypes as the previously validly published Rhinacanthus breviflorus. A molecular phylogeny in collaboration with E. Tripp (COLO), Iain Darbyshire (K) and Tom Daniel (CAS) is in progress and will hopefully help to determine if the genus Vavara needs to be validated or if it falls in the genus Rhinacanthus.
