Shrubs and trees, unarmed, terrestrial or usually epiphytic, succulent, sometimes with resinous buds, sometimes deciduous. Leaves opposite, isophyllous, entire, without domatia; without lineolate venation; stipules interpetiolar and shortly intrapetiolar, triangular to ovate, erect, caducous. Inflorescences terminal, corymbiform-cymose, 9-14-flowered, the bracts reduced and caducous. Flowers pedicellate, bisexual, homostylous, probably protandrous; calyx limb 4-5-lobed to the base, without calycophylls; corola salverform or somewhat funnelform, red to dark violet, glabrous, the lobes 4-5, convolute, without attendices; stamens 5, the anthers dorsifixed near the base, included; stigma 1, shortly bilobed, partially exserted; ovary 2-locular, the ovules numerous on axile placentas. Fruits capsular, shortly loculicidal at the apex then deeply septicidal, obconic or narrowly ovoid to narrowly cylindrical, woody, at the apex shortly 4-lobed, the calyx limb deciduous; seeds laterally flattened, fusiform with membranaceous marginal wings.
