General/Distribution: A genus of c. 18 species, chiefly in tropical and temperate America; widely cultivated and sometimes naturalized. 2 species are commonly cultivated here, of which several varieties occur.

Usually climbing or straggling shrubs. Leaves alternate, petiolate, entire. Flowers small, tubular, each inserted on the midrib of each bract. Bracts 3, showy. Perianth tube 5-6-lobed. Stamens 7-8, connate at the base. Style lateral. Anthocarp fusiform, glabrous or pubescent, 5-ribbed.
