Although numerous genera have been segregated from Senecio, the genus is probably still para- or polyphyletic. Lianoid spp. corresponding to group XIII of Humbert in Fl. Madagasc. were referred to Humbertacalia C. Jeffrey. Shrub and tree spp. of groups I, II, and VI were included in Hubertia Bory. A study by Pelser et al. (2007) noted that a subclade consisting of a species-rich African-Malagasy group identified in their molecular treatment of Senecioneae is in “need of recognition as a new genus (Nordenstam et al. in prep)”. Excluded species: Senecio salicifolius Pers. Syn. II (1807) due to labeling error, see Fl. Madagasc. p. 436.
