This name was published originally as a nom. nov. based on Cephaelis acanthacea Standley ex Steyerm., which at that time was considered an invalid name because Steyermark designated two specimens as the holotype and the Code did not permit that for a time. These specimens comprise one gathering mounted on two sheets, cited and annotated as such by Steyermark, one sheet with the inflorescence and the other sheet with the leaf. Subsequently the Code was changed to permit this situation, as noted explicitly for this name in Art. 8 Ex. 4. Thus, Palicourea acanthacea is a now combination based on Cephaelis acanthea; Its authorship was originally incorrrectly attributed to "Standl. ex C.M. Taylor", however Standley never proposed a name for this species in Palicourea and thus cannot be cited as the author proposing the name; the citation of Standley there was intended to provide a nomenclatural link to the previously used but invalid name for this species.
