Notes: This species is characterized by its robust habit, well developed laminar bilobed stipules, large petiolate leaves, subsessile purple inflorescences that are subcapitate with well developed bracts, tubular purple to white corollas, and ellipsoid blue fruits. It is generally similar to Palicourea grandistipula, Palicourea amplissima, Palicourea tamaensis, and Palicourea sopkinii. This species was classified in Palicourea subg. Montanae sect. Cephaeloides ser. 11 by Taylor (1997), but later re-classifed in Palicourea sect. Chocoanae.
Distribution: Wet lowland vegetation, Chocó biogeographic region of western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador.
