These plants have been previously treated as a biological species, but they are here considered a natural hybrid between Gaertnera ternifolia and G. walkeri. The morphology of G. ×gardneri is intermediate between these species, and is variable and irregular even on a single plants, in particular in leaf arrangement. Van Beusekom (1967) concluded that these plants are hybrids but did not recognize them taxonomically. Whether these plants are fertile is as yet unknown.
