This species belongs to Subg. Hillia; this is the most widely distributed and the most commonly collected species in the genus.

Wet lowland, premontane, and montane forests, Greater Antilles, Lesser Antilles, and Colombia to Bolivia and southeastern Brazil, often frequent in secondary vegetation.
