Plants small, forming dense tufts or cushions, dark green to blackish- or brownish-green. Stems erect, few branched; in cross-section outer row slightly thick-walled, inner cells somewhat larger, central strand absent or present. Leaves appressed when dry, patent to reflexed when wet, differentiated, leaf limb ligulate to lingulate, distally broadly enrolled, leaf base short oblong, plane and sheathing apex obtuse to broadly rounded, cucullate; margins entire; costae single, appearing to end 1/2-2/3 lamina length or percurrent, in cross-section guide cells in 1-4 layers,dorsal and ventral stereids absent or present; lamina bistratose above with marginsunistratose, dorsal limb cells quadrate to rectangular, not bulging,thick-walled, smooth, ventral limb cells larger than dorsal, irregularly quadrate to short rectangular, bulging, thin-walled, base cells rectangular,quadrate or oblate, transversely thick-walled, collenchymatous, smooth. Gemmae absent. Monoicous (cryptoicous). Perichaetia terminal; leaves undifferentiated. Setae scarcely differentiated to short, erect, twisted. Capsules immersed to shortly exserted, erect, urn hemispherict o broadly ovoid; exothecial cells rectangular to long-hexagonal, thick- to thin-walled; stomata present at urn base, superficial; annuli in 2-4 rows;opercula mammillate to rostrate, annulus persistent, non-vesiculose, thin-walled; peristome absent or single with 16 teeth. Calyptrae mitrate, lobed at base, plicate or not. Spores spherical, papillose.
 
Plantas pequeñas, formando manojoa o cojines densos, verde oscuras a negruzcas o verde-marrones. Tallos erectos, poco ramificados; en corte transversal fila externa con paredes escasamente gruesas, células internas algo mayores, banda central ausente o presente. Hojas adpresas en seco, patentes a reflexas en húmedo, diferenciadas, limbo de la hoja ligular a lingüiforme, anchamente enrolladas en la porción distal, base de la hoja corto oblonga, ápices planos y envainantes obtusos a anchamente redondeados, cuculados; márgenes enteros; costa simple, aparentemente terminando 1/2-2/3 de la lámina o percurrente, en corte transversal células guía en 1-4 capas, estereidas dorsales y ventrales ausentes o presentes; lámina biestratificada distalmente con márgenes uniestratosos, células dorsales del limbo cuadradas a rectangulares, no abultadas, con paredes gruesas, células ventrales del limbo mayores que las células dorsales, lisas, irregularmente cuadradas a corto rectangulares, abultadas, con paredes delgada, células basales rectangulares,cuadradas u oblatas, paredes transversales gruesas, colenquimatosas, lisas. Yemas ausentes. Monoicas (criptoicas). Periquecios terminales; hojas indiferenciadas. Setas escasamente diferenciadas a cortas, erectas y torcido. Cápsulas inmersas a brevemente excertas, erectas, urna hemisférica o anchamente ovoide; células exoteciales rectangulares a largo-hexagonales, con paredes gruesas a delgadas; estomas en la base de la urna, superficiales; anillo en 2-4 filas; opérculo mamilífero a rostrado, anillo persistente, no-vesiculoso, con paredes celulares delgadas; peristoma ausente o simple con 16 dientes. Caliptra mitrada, lobada en la base, plegada o no. esporas esféricas, papilosas.
