Scorpidium contains three species primarily from the cold north temperate region. Two species are recorded for Bolivia and the Neotropics.

 

Scorpidium contiene tres especies distribuidas principalmente en las regiones frías templadas del norte. Dos especies son registradas en Bolivia y el Neotrópico.

Plants medium sized to rather large, often yellowish-brown or red. Stems regular to irregularly pinnately branched, often in one plane; in cross-section hyalodermis present, partial or complete. Leaves oblong-ovate or ovate-lanceolate, moderately to strongly concave, apex obtuse, apiculate or long acuminate, smooth or weakly plicate, entire below, entire or faintly dentate at apex; costa single or short and forked; upper median cells linear, smooth, thin- to firm-walled, entire or porose; alar cells weakly differentiated, forming a small group of cells. Dioicous. [Setae elongate, smooth. Capsules curved, urn cylindrical; peristome well developed. Calyptrae cucullate, naked and smooth. Spores lightly papillose.]

 

Plantas medianas a bastante grandes, a menudo pardo-amarillentas o rojas. Tallos con ramificaciones regular a irregularmente pinnadas, a menudo en un plano; hialodermis presente en corte transversal, parcial o completa. Hojas oblongo-ovadas u ovado-lanceoladas, moderada hasta marcadamente cóncavas, ápices obtusos, apiculados o largo-acuminados, lisas o débilmente plegadas, enteras en la base, enteras o débilmente dentadas en el ápice; costa simple o corta y bifurcada; células superiores medias lineales, lisas, con paredes delgadas a firmes, enteras o porosas;  células alares débilmente diferenciadas, formando un pequeño grupo de células. Dioicas. [Setas largas y lisas. Cápsulas curvadas, urna cilíndrica; peristoma bien desarrollado. Caliptra cuculada, desnuda y lisa. Esporas finamente papilosas.]
