general taxon notes:

A monospecific neotropical genus. Koponenia is characterized by the aquatic habitat, stiff, short branched stems, filiform paraphyllia, stiffly spreading, triangular or short lanceolate leaves, very broad single costa, to 4/5 the width of leaf base, bistratose base, thick-walled upper laminal cells, and undifferentiated alar region. The generic name honors the Finnish bryologist Timo Juhani Koponen (1939-), specialist on the Mniaceae.
 
Un género neotropical monoespecífico. Koponenia es característica de hábitats acuáticos, presenta tallos con ramas cortas, rígidas, paráfilos filiformes, rígidamente patentes, hojas lanceoladas, triangulares o cortas, costa simple muy ancha, ocupando 4/5 del ancho de la base de la hoja, base biestratificada, células superiores de la lámina con paredes gruesas y región alar indiferenciada. El nombre genérico hace honor al briólogo finlandés Timo Juhani Koponen (1939-), especialista en la familia Mniaceae.
