The Plagiotheciaceae, as treated here, is monogeneric, containing only Plagiothecium; previously classifications have included several other genera; see Buck and Ireland (1985) for a historical overview. This genus probably should be placed in the Hypnaceae; there are no defining characters that readily separate this taxon from that family.
