This is a monotypic family found at high altitudes in the mountains of north temperate regions.

Plants small, medium-sized to rather robust, dark green, in loose tufts. Stems erect or ascending, simple or branched, often radiculose at base. Leaves dense, in 8 rows, erect or twisted, appressed when dry, erect-spreading when moist, ovate- or linear-lanceolate, sheathing at base; margins involute, border not differentiated, sharply serrate above; costae strong, ending in leaf apex, dentate at back near apex, in cross section dorsal and ventral stereid bands present; leaf cells small, unistratose, quadrate or rounded-hexagonal, papillose at ventral side, cells at sheathing base narrowly rectangular, becoming narrower at margin, hyaline, smooth or dorsally papillose. Dioicous or autoicous. Perichaetia terminal. Setae solitary, elongate; capsules elongate-ovoid, brownish, inclined, horizontal or nearly pendulous, furrowed when dry; neck short; exothecial cells thick-walled, smooth; opercula conic at base, shortly apiculate; annuli differentiated; peristome double; exostome teeth reflexed, broadly lanceolate, united at base, papillose or cross-striolate below, with a median zigzag line, trabeculate at inner surface; endostome segments as long as the teeth, keeled, often dissected into 64 papillose, linear segments or threads; basal membrane high, smooth; cilia 3–5, papillose. Calyptrae long-cucullate, smooth. Spores spherical, smooth or roughened to minutely papillose.
