Plants slender, medium-sized to rather robust, dendroid, gregarious or in loose tufts. Stems erect, usually simple, sometimes branched, densely radiculose at base; in cross section a central strand well developed. Leaves spreading, not very crowded, small below, larger above, narrowly lanceolate to linear-lanceolate; margins more or less bordered, sometimes by linear cells, sharply single- or double-toothed; costae single, strong, often percurrent or shortly excurrent, sometimes ending below the apex, usually dentate at back above, in cross section with 1–2 stereid bands; leaf cells small, rounded or hexagonal, rarely lax, elongate-hexagonal, smooth, rarely mammillose. Dioicous, rarely autoicous. Perichaetia budlike, basal or lateral. Outer perichaetial leaves small, inner ones large. Setae elongate, straight, rarely short; capsules elongate-ovoid to cylindrical, erect, inclined or horizontal, sometimes curved at back; neck short; opercula conic at base, obliquely rostrate; peristome double, rarely single; exostome teeth 16, lanceolate, cross-striolate below, papillose above, with zigzag median line; endostome segments keeled, perforate; basal membranes low or high; cilia usually present. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth. Spores spherical, small.
