general taxon notes:
Brachythecium viridefactum is similar to B. plumosum, but it differs by its slenderly acuminate leaf apices, its nearly percurrent costae, its nearly truncate leaf bases, and its distinctly inflated alar cells. This species was treated as a synonym of B. buchananii by Ignatov and Koponen (1996).
