Ecology. Open Yungas montane; on wet boggy soil and along stream banks. Elevation. 2625 m. Distribution. Bolivia: Santa Cruz. World range: eastern North America (Atlantic and Gulf region), tropical Andes, southeast Brazil.
 
Ecología. Montano abierto de Yungas; sobre suelo húmedo pantanoso y a lo largo de taludes de arroyo. Altitud. 2625 m. Distribución. Bolivia: Santa Cruz. Distribución mundial: este de Norte América (región Atlántica y del Golfo), Andes tropicales, sureste de Brasil.
 
This species is sometimes recognized as a variety of Sphagnum capillifolium. Assigned to section Acutifolia.
