Notes:
Ecology: Premontane to montane and páramo; on wet boggy soil and along stream banks. Elevation: 850-3800 m (Venezuela: 850-1500 m, Colombia: 1800-3800 m, Ecuador: 2430-2830 m, Bolivia: 2625 m). Distribution: Eastern North America (Atlantic and Gulf region), tropical Andes, southeast Brazil. Sphagnum tenerum has also been recognized as a variety of S. capillifolium. Assigned to section Acutifolia.
 
Ecología: Premontano a montano y páramo; en suelo pantanoso húmedo y a lo largo de orillas de corrientes. Elevación: 850-3800 m (Venezuela: 850-1500 m, Colombia: 1800-3800 m, Ecuador: 2430-2830 m, Bolivia: ? m). Distribución: Este de Norteamérica (Atlántico y la región del Golfo), Andes Tropicales, sudeste de Brasil. Algunas veces reconocido como una variedad de Sphagnum capillifolium. Asignada a la sección Acutifolia.
