General/Distribution: A large genus of about 350 species; usually arenicolous or on sandy sea coasts. Mostly S. African, Canaries, the Mediterranean and Arabia. Represented here by 1 cultivated species.

Annual or perennial prostrate or erect herbs. Leaves alternate or oppo¬site. Flowers white, red or yellow, solitary or in cymes. Petals many, linear, united at the base. Stamens many, united at the base. Ovary inferior; stigmas 5. Capsule 5-angled, dehiscing by 5 valves. Seeds many.
