Introduction

Welcome to the Mosses of the Tropical Andes home page! Here you will find links and text related to the rich moss diversity of the Andean region. The scope of the area encompasses the entire countries of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and the northwest portion of Argentina (provinces of Jujuy, Salta and Tucumán). Regional diversity is one of the highest in the world for mosses, with over 2000 species recorded, distributed among 362 genera and 76 families.
Efforts of the project include: 1) previous and ongoing field work in the various countries, 2) a data base containing 48,110 collections entered in the Missouri Botanical Garden TROPICOS system (W3MOST), providing for each species a specimen list and map, 3) a checklist linked to the TROPICOS data base, 4) a flora "in progress", 5) links to the various countries, collectors, author names, and literature (with a limited number of 19th and early 20th century journal articles scanned and accessible for viewing, e.g., Herzog 1916).

Previous grants from the National Science Foundation (DEB-8818051, DEB-9201281 with A.I.D. support, DEB-9626747) have been instrumental in the development of the moss flora of Colombia, and the Tropical Andes. The present ongoing study of Bolivian mosses is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (DEB-0542422). Small support grants have been provided by Danish Natural Science Research Council (Colombia, Ecuador), the Conoco & Lawrence Fund, New York Botanical Garden (Colombia), and the Taylor Fund for Ecological Research, Missouri Botanical Garden (Bolivia).
Many individuals and institutions have provided support directly or indirectly to the Moss Flora of the Tropical Andes project over some 20 years.
