Plants minute, protonemata abundant, usually in large patches on moist, disturbed soil. Stems very short and slender. Lower leaves small, ovate-lanceolate; upper leaves narrowly lanceolate to linear lanceolate; costa single, slender, nearly percurrent; upper and median leaf cells irregularly rhomboidal; basal cells larger, lax, thin-walled, rectangular. Dioicous, rarely polygamous; paraphyses absent. Setae very short; capsules globose, apiculate, without opercula. Calyptrae mitrate, lobed at base. Spores large, spherical, ca. 80 µm in diameter, coarsely papillose.
