Plants small, slender, soft, bright green, yellowish green or dark green, mostly glossy, in flat patches. Stems prostrate, with clustered rhizoids; irregularly branched, branches mostly densely foliate, julaceous, sometimes flat; central strand not well differentiated. Leaves imbricate or remotely foliate, sometimes secund toward one side, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, mostly piliferous, straight, smooth or serrate, sometimes ciliate; costa slender and weak, ending at midleaf, sometimes dentate on the dorsal side of the costa; leaf cells rhombic or rhomboidal; alar cells differentiated, quadrate or flat quadrate, in numerous rows, occasionally not differentiated. Autoicous. Inner perichaetial leaves sheathing at base, slenderly long-acuminate, ciliate or serrate, costa absent. Setae slender, yellowish or brownish red, twisted when dry, smooth; capsules erect, obovoid, apophysis short, sometimes not distinct; opercula conic, shortly beaked; peristome single, rarely absent, broadly lanceolate, not clearly keeled, densely cross-striate or papillose. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth. Spores spherical, nearly smooth or finely papillose.
