Plants slender, dark green to brownish, dull, in dense small mats. Primary stems creeping, with brown reddish fascicled rhizoids; branches short; paraphyllia lacking. Leaves imbricate when dry, erect or secund when moist, cordate or oblong-ovate at base, slightly decurrent, usually biplicate; margins slightly recurved below, plane above, entire; costa single, strong, yellowish, reaching leaf apices; upper leaf cells round to hexagonal, smooth, slightly thick-walled; median cells oblong; alar cells quadrate; branch leaves rather small, plane at margins, costa shorter and weaker than that of stem leaves. Dioicous. Inner perichaetial leaves more or less sheathing at base, rapidly narrowed to an acuminate apex; costa thin, weak, percurrent, cells linear. Setae erect; capsules erect, rarely somewhat curved, cylindrical to oblong-cylindrical, red or brown; annuli persistent or deciduous; peristome double; exostome teeth shortly lanceolate, yellow, borders differentiated, transversely or obliquely striolate on outer surfaces, papillose or smooth at apex; endostome segments yellow, finely papillose, irregularly thickened, lanceolate or narrowly lanceolate, rarely fragmentary; basal membrane high; cilia absent, rarely rudimentary; opercula stout, conic, obliquely rostrate. Spores small, reddish brown, verrucose.
