木毛藓科   mu mao xian ke

Plants usually large, very robust, thick, stiff, slightly glossy, in loose tufts on tree trunks. Primary stems short, creeping; secondary stems elongate, up to 50 cm long, pendulous, simple or irregularly branched; in cross section central strand well developed, with multi-layers of cortical cells. Leaves dense, in multiple rows, strongly sheathing at base, ovate-lanceolate to slenderly lanceolate, gradually acuminate at apex; margins sharply serrate above the sheathing base; costae single, strong, mostly excurrent, often dentate at back, in cross section with 2 stereid bands; leaf cells rectangular, smooth, bistratose in the upper part of leaves, 2 to multiple layers at margins. Dioicous. Male plants slender. Sporophytes lateral. Setae short; capsules large, elongate-ovoid, erect or slightly inclined; neck short; stomata present; opercula conic at base, obliquely rostrate; annuli not differentiated; peristome double; exostome teeth twisted when dry, with median zigzag line, trabeculate on the inner side; endostome segments as long as the teeth, keeled, split above; basal membrane low; cilia absent. Calyptrae cucullate, smooth. Spores small, minutely papillose.
