 Amblystegium varium is characterized by its strong, single costa that is usually curved in the upper part and reaches close to the leaf apex.

Plants small, yellowish or brownish green, in loosely caespitose mats. Stems prostrate, 2–5 cm long, irregularly branched; pseudoparaphyllia small, foliose; central strand weakly differentiated. Stem leaves erect, elongate-ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 1.6–1.2 mm × ca. 0.5 mm, gradually acuminate, slightly decurrent at base; costae reaching leaf apex, usually curved in upper part; margins serrulate; median leaf cells rhomboidal, thick-walled, 20–35 mm × 7–9 mm; alar cells slightly differentiated, small, quadrate. Autoicous. Inner perichaetial leaves erect, lanceolate, plicate; costae single, strong. Setae slender, elongate, curved when dry; capsules cylindrical, arching curved; endostome segments carinate; cilia 1–2, longer than the segments, nodulose. Spores 9–12 mm in diameter, spherical, finely papillose.
