general taxon notes:
Hypnum cupressiforme is characterized by having numerous thick-walled alar cells that are formed in a distinct group in constrast to other leaf cells. It varies greatly in habit, so that numerous varieties were recognized.

Plants medium-sized, up to 10 cm long, green or yellowish green, brownish or dark green, glossy, in dense patches. Stems slender, creeping or ascending, irregularly to regularly pinnately branched, branches 3–5 mm long; in stem cross section central strand developed, epidermal cells small, thick-walled; pseudoparaphyllia few, foliose or shortly lanceolate. Stem leaves and branch leaves similar, dense, falcate-secund, elliptic-lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, sometimes narrowly lanceolate, concave, plane, gradually acuminate, 1.6–2.2 mm × 0.5–0.8 mm; margins entire or serrulate above; costae double, short or indistinct; median and upper leaf cells narrowly rhomboidal, 29–40 µm × 3.0–4.3 µm, thin-walled or slightly thick-walled; basal cells wider, thick-walled, porose; alar cells numerous, small, quadrate to hexagonal, hyaline or yellowish brown, with 6–15 cells extending along the margin. Dioicous. Setae elongate, 1–3 cm long, reddish; capsules erect or inclined, cylindrical, curved when old; opercula conic, rostrate; annuli developed, in 2 rows; peristome teeth normal, with 1–2 long cilia. Spores 12–20 µm in diameter, minutely papillose.
