Plants small to medium-sized, 0.5–2.5 cm high, bright green or yellowish green, in dense tufts. Stems erect, simple or rarely branched, often bearing gemmae in leaf axils. Leaves erect, soft, imbricately arranged, 3–4 mm long, contorted when dry, flexuous-spreading when moist, oblong-ovate to oblong-obovate, obtuse or acute at apex, somewhat constricted at base; margins plane, distinctly dentate above the midleaf; costa ending below leaf apex; upper leaf cells large, lax, thin-walled, oblong-hexagonal; lower cells rectangular. Autoicous. Perichaetia without paraphyses. Setae erect, 0.7–2.0 cm long, twisted when dry, orange-yellow or reddish; capsules with oblong-cylindrical urns, ca. 1–2 mm long, apophyses well developed, nearly as long as the urns; opercula conic, shortly rostrate; annuli none; peristome teeth 16, inserted below the mouth. Calyptrae naked, smooth. Spores small, 9–12 µm in diameter, smooth.
