general taxon notes:
Brachythecium dicranoides is characterized by its secund branch leaves with incurved and somewhat cucullate at leaf apices, and by its shorter median leaf cells (30–42 µm long vs. usually longer than 50 µm in most Brachythecium species).

Plants dark green, in flat mats. Stem leaves imbricate when dry, erect-spreading when moist, oblong-ovate, 1.4–2.1 mm × 0.69–0.77 mm, concave, slenderly acuminate, often incurved at apex, distinctly decurrent at base; margins entire throughout; costae slender, ending in leaf acumen; median leaf cells linear-rhomboidal, 30–42 µm × 7–9 µm; alar cells differentiated, rectangular or elliptical, lax, thin-walled, extending close to costa at leaf base; branch leaves similar to stem leaves in shape, distinctly secund. Sporophytes not seen.
