general taxon notes:
Brachythecium oedipodium is similar to B. rivulare, but the latter differs in having distinctly decurrent leaf bases, shorter costa (only up to 1/2 the leaf length), and longer median leaf cells (72–96 µm vs. 37–60 µm long).

Plants medium-sized, green or yellowish green, in loose mats. Stems to 3 cm long, ascending or curved, irregularly branched, more or less flattened. Stem and branch leaves similar, broadly ovate, 0.90–1.40 mm × 0.59–0.92 mm, somewhat concave, slightly plicate, shortly acuminate at apex; margins plane, entire below, serrate near lear apex, slightly decurrent at base; costae slender, extending ca. 4/5 the leaf length; median leaf cells elongate-curved-rhomboidal, 37–60 µm × 5.5–7.0 µm, with rounded ends; alar cells few, loose, shortly rectangular, somewhat inflated. Autoicous. Perichaetial leaves sheathing at base. Setae 10–30 mm long, brownish or orange, papillose throughout; capsules inclined to horizontal, asymmetric, 1.5–2.0 mm long, elongate-ovoid; opercula shortly conic-rostrate; annuli developed, in 2 rows; peristome double; endostome segments as long as exostome teeth; cilia 2–3, appendiculate. Spores 11–15 µm in diameter, smooth or papillose.
