general taxon notes:
 
This species is very close to Brotherella henonii, but the latter has more robust plants, and larger and erect stem leaves.

Brotherella kirishimensis Sak., J. Jap. Bot. 24: 134. f. 2. 1949.
 
Plants small, in compact mats. Main stems and secondary stems reddish, complanate, elongate and creeping, irregularly branched, ca. 1.0 cm long, ca. 1 mm wide. Stem leaves erect, slightly falcate, ovate-lanceolate, wider at base, gradually long acuminate, 1.00–1.25 mm long, slightly concave; serrulate near apex; branch leaves erect at apex, denticulate at upper margins; leaf cells linear, 55–100 mm long; alar region consisting of one row of inflated cells. Inner perichaetial leaves narrowly lanceolate, plicate, gradually constricted into a long acuminate, serrate apex; cells papillose. Setae elongate, 2.0–2.5 cm long; capsules oblong-ovoid to cylindrical, slightly arcuate, ca. 2 mm long; opercula shortly rostrate.
