Habitat: on rocks, soil, tree trunks or rotten wood in forests; alt. 1800–4320 m.
Distribution: endemic to China.

18. Hypnum submolluscum Besch.   拟梳灰藓   ni shu hui xian
Ann. Sci. Nat., Bot., ser. 7, 15: 93. 1892. Type: China. Yunnan, Tsang-yang-tchang, 24 May 1889, Delavay s.n.
Plants medium-sized. Stems prostrate, up to 5 cm long, pinnately branched, rarely bipinnately branched, branches 0.4–1.0 cm long; in stem cross section epidermal cells not inflated, outer cortical cells 4 layers, yellowish brown, medullar cells thick-walled; central strand developed. Stem leaves falcate-secund toward one side, ovate-lanceolate, cordate at base, smooth, sometimes plicate, 1.5–1.7 mm × 0.4–0.5 mm, slenderly acuminate, circinate toward the apex; margins plane, slightly recurved below, serrulate near the apex; costae double, short, sometimes indistinct; basal cells golden yellow, alar cells not excavate, often consisting of one larger, hyaline cell and a few smaller, subquadrate cells, 3–4 rows cells at margins; branch leaves smaller, 1.2–1.4 mm × 0.3–0.4 mm; margins plane; median cells 40–60 µm × ca. 2.5 µm; alar cells differentiated, with one inflated, hyaline cell. Dioicous. Inner perichaetial leaves lanceolate, gradually acuminate, serrulate near apex, plicate, ecostate. Setae ca. 2.0 cm long; capsules dark brownish, suberect to horizontal, ca. 1.2 mm long; opercula and annuli not seen; peristome typically hypnoid, with 1–2 cilia. Calyptrae not seen. Spores not seen.
