Redfearn et al. (1996) and X.-J. Li (2006) mistakenly followed Crosby et al. (1992) by listing this species as "nomen illegitimum", and synonymized with Bryum hawaiicum Hoe. Thus, this species has not been treated in the moss flora of China. Mohamed (1979) provided a detailed description of this species. Some of the key features are: plants 1–3 cm high; tubers small sized; gemmae filamentous; leaves scarcely twisted, with shortly excurrent costa; margins strongly recurved, not strongly toothed above, and border indistinct.
