Plants medium-sized to rather large, 3–5(–8) cm high, in loose tufts. Stems erect, usually branched at the upper part, densely foliate; central strand present. Leaves strongly crisped when dry, curved-spreading when moist, narrowly lanceolate, 4.0–7.5 mm × 0.8–1.0 mm, sheathing at the base, gradually acuminate; margins plane, entire; costa slender, excurrent in a rather long awn; upper leaf cells quadrate to irregularly hexagonal, moderately thick-walled, with several simple to branched papillae in each cell; basal cells weakly differentiated, quadrate to rectangular, thick-walled, usually smooth, hyaline, differentiated basal cells extending up both sides at margins forming a V-shaped region.
